From ancient times people believed that gemstones have mystical powers which are bestowed on the wearer. Meanings are linked even with the color of the gemstone. For example, cool blue sapphire means that the person wearing it remains cool even under pressure while fiery and passionate people should wear a red ruby.
The gemstone are also related with zodiac signs or months of the year. Those who were born in a particular month of the year were believed to have qualities resembling that of the birthstone or gemstone that was linked to that particular month.
The United States of America adopted in 1912 the official birthstone list. This list contains over 12 gemstones and was actually made by the American National Association of Jewelers, Jewelers of America.
The modern birthstones and their respective birth months are:
- Garnet – January
- Amethyst – February
- Aquamarine – March
- Diamond – April
- Emerald – May
- Pearl – June
- Ruby – July
- Peridot – August
- Sapphire – September
- Opal – October
- Yellow Topaz – November
- Blue Topaz – December
