The Olympic Australis Opal is one of the most famous, large and valuable opal gem found so far. It was discovered in 1956 by a miner at a depth of 30 feet in the “Eight Mile” Coober Pedy, an opal field in South Australia. The name of this immense opal gem seems to describe its impressive size, but actually comes from the Olympic Games hosted in that period in Melbourne, Australia. The gem has only 1% attached soil and the rest of 99% is pure opal with even color. It is valued at AUD $2,500,000 meaning approximately 2 million American dollars.
