Sotheby’s is one of the biggest players amongst famous auction houses. It is the second oldest auction house “in continuous operation”, founded in 1744 under the name of Baker’s, in London, England, by Samuel Baker. The business started with valuable rare books and later developing toward fine and decorative art. The company is currently having an annual turnover of more or less 3 billion dollars. IT has also expanded into having several divisions: International, London, New York and Moscow. Sotheby’s has a vivid rivalry with Christie’s auction house. In 2000, Sotheby’s became the first international art auction house to hold auctions on the Internet.
