Jewelry becomes vintage when is at least be fifty years old and still in prime condition. When a piece of quality vintage jewelry stores over a hundred years old it becomes an antique piece.

Any jewelry collector knows that in order for jewelry to be called vintage it must fit in a certain era (it is an age requirement). Eco jewelry is a quite vague concept and in fact it means a lot of things. Eco jewelry is taking jewelry to the next level, ethical jewelry. Eco jewelery refers to more types of jewelry:

A more ethical approach is also jewelry products that offer a percentage of their purchase value to a worthy cause. Buying fair trade jewelry directly supports Third World craftspeople. Eco-jewelry are also created by artisans of South America which create jewelry from eco-friendly elements: Acai seeds, Tagua nuts, Melon seeds, Coconut, Calabash, Bamboo, Tropical Pumpkin seeds, and Orange skins. The eco-jewelry is made of biodegradable materials that have been harvested in a sustainable manner.

I was also impressed by the so called genuine sea glass jewelry, sea glass that was worn smooth only by the sea. Natural materials for jewelry are also pebbles and shells.

Eco-jewelry is in my opinion vintage jewelry that has set this trend of reusing. Also jewelry from older pieces or recycled material or metal (recycled platinum and gold), gathered from flea markets, thrift stores, family & friends is a friendly approach. Quite an unusual approach is the jewelry from actual fabrics.

Blood diamonds and gemstones have also been a center of conflict and ethical problems, for this cultured gemstones, diamond replacement or artificial diamonds are much more preferred. Clearly it’s not the same thing, but for me it’s preferable to encouraging indirectly human abuse and other social issues that are connected to diamond exploitation.
